One Day by David Nicholls

“And then some days you wake up, and everything’s perfect” – David Nicholls One Day

From Lauren’s Perspective:

Beautiful, heart-wrenching love story.  The kind that makes you love the characters while hating the characters while loving them.  You will yell at your book, you will be angry at your book, you will despise the characters never-ending stupidity and inability to see the obvious.  And you will cry.

I think a good love story should cause all these reactions.  You feel these things because you genuinely care about the characters.

Having said all of this though, the ending sucked.  Not because it wasn’t written well or because it wasn’t thought out or because it was predictable.  It happened as it was meant to happen, it happened in the only way it could happen, but it just sucked.

When I finish reading a book like this, I want to believe that love makes everything in life worthwhile.  Love conquers all.  Instead I was left believing life is hard, then it gets harder, and just when you finally find what you have been looking for, it gets unimaginably hard.  I need happiness and instead was given an affirmation that there is no point to anything.

Now, having said all this, I definitely recommend this book (to everyone but Krista.  Krista you are not allowed to read this book).  The writing was beautifully simple, the story was intriguing and demanding.  But be prepared to ponder the purpose of life and love by the story’s end.
